Meet bonginkosi Hlongwane, who goes by the stage name “BOKKIE ULT”.Bokkie is a friend of the Si Sessions and jack of all trades who is pushing boundaries as a creative and entrepreneur and during our conversation with him, we got to find out what other balls he's juggling in the entertainment industry.
BOKKIE was born on the 5th of June 1994. Which not only makes him a freedom baby but also a gemini. He was born and raised in Vaal Sebokeng and is currently residing in the city of Gold. His favourite food is sea food and when we asked him to share an interesting fact about himself he said and we quote “ I'm a great cook and im funny as fuck!”
BOKKIE ULT the MUSICIAN
BOKKIE has been active in the music industry for 7 years and when we asked him why the music industry his response was: “I think the industry chose me, I just chose the music.” We couldn’t relate more! It is usually our passions, that often pick us! BOKKIE is a technical DJ by style and quite frankly, one of the best technical DJs we recognize here at the Si Sessions! Music wise, he is now venturing into soulful afro with a bit of tech. When it comes to musical inspiration, BOKKIE shared that he doesn’t have that one person who inspires him, but draws from different people for different reasons.
According to BOKKIE the best part about being a musician, is the ability to heal himself. He reassured us by reiterating, “Music is healing guys,” and you know what BOKKIE? We believe you! Music is a remedy for the soul.
The worst thing about being a musician for him though, is that: “People always see you as a musician.” Which makes sense because as entertainers we can entertain beyond one boundary of entertainment.
Usually, drinking on the job is something that would be HR intervention worthy but when it comes to the entertainment industry, drinking is part of the job. So, we had to know if BOKKIE performs sober or inebriated and interestingly enough, we learnt that he doesn’t drink nor smoke, at all! He does everything “sober minded.”
BOKKIE ULT's 2 cents
As a South African artist, we wanted to know what BOKKIE’s personal thoughts and feelings were toward the South African music scene at the moment; so, we asked him two questions. The first: His take on the South African music industry, right now? His response: “I almost became typical and said we are not united but again, I thought about the ‘Amapiano’ guys, I think they changed the game. I love how they broke individualism. The second question we asked BOKKIE, was: Where he thought South Africa was sonically right now? His response: “SA is growing sonically; the quality is getting insane and I don’t want to talk about the talent because it’s always been… that’s why the world is looking at us right now
We’re interested to know what the Sesh’ Squad’s two cents on the current state of the South African industry is. Be sure to leave your comments on our Si Sessions social media pages or tag us with you your response on our hashtags #SiSessions & #ThePodParty!
